SUMMARY:It's An Emergency! Homelessness In NYC
DESCRIPTION:“You have at least 70\,000 homeless on any given day\, between those on the street and those in shelters. It’s an emergency.” – Michael Greenberg from an interview in Slate\, 8/8/17. \nMichael Greenberg\, distinguished journalist with experience covering homelessness in New York City\, will provide an informative and dynamic overview of NYC homelessness and the major contributors to the problem in our city. \nIn a recent article in The New York Review of Books\, Greenberg wrote that: “New York City is in the throes of a humanitarian emergency … man-made and shaped by a combination of forces that have led to a large-scale “displacement of populations” from their homes. What makes the crisis especially startling is that New York has the most progressive housing laws in the country and a mayor who has made tenants’ rights and affordable housing a central focus of his administration.” \nAfter the talk\, we’ll have an opportunity to tour the Ansche Chesed men’s shelter; learn about how it runs\, and about the particular population it serves (prior to the shelter guests’ arrival.) Then we’ll wrap up with coffee and snacks and a chance to talk with long-time volunteers about their experiences staffing the AC shelter. \nPlease join us!
