Selichot: Judges on the Day of Judgement

Please join us for a Selichot evening program that will stimulate your mind and your soul, and help you get ready for the season of Teshuva, or “repentance.” Rosh HaShanah is called Yom HaDin, the “day of judgment,” when Jews stand before God, the “judge of all the world.” Join three thoughtful Jews who serve as judges in their day jobs – the Hon. Seth Marnin of the New York Court of Claims, and the Hon. Ralph Wolf, of NYC criminal court, both AC members, and the Hon. Pamela Scheininger, of NYC family court – to reflect on religious metaphors of judgment, mercy, equity and guilt. Elul Reflections Through Watercolor and Collage, with Amy Tenenouser and Rabbi Yael Hammerman

Sunday, September 14 from 10:30am – 12pm in 5 North

In this Elul workshop presented by AC member and artist Amy Tenenouser and Rabbi Yael Hammerman, participants will be introduced to visual ideas of memory, reflection and change through the work of artists such as Marc Chagall, Hannah Hoch and Phillip Guston, and Jewish poetry to ground our process. Working from both Still Life Set-ups as well as themes that invoke imagination and life stories, participants will use watercolor and/or collaging to tap into their own unique form of creative expression. For almost 1,500 years, fine artists have grappled with the terse, complex story of the Binding of Isaac, giving us powerful visual interpretations which many of us have never seen. Following kiddush, AC member Lilly Kaufman will share selected historic and modern images, and lead a conversation about these works to help deepen our experience of this story when we hear it chanted on the second day of Rosh HaShanah. ROOTED: A Jewish Day of Service for the Earth, with Adamah

Join New Yorkers of all ages from across NYC, Westchester, and Long Island, for ROOTED – a powerful, hands-on volunteer day of environmental service grounded in Jewish values. From parks to beaches to gardens, we’ll roll up our sleeves and care for the earth together, as one big New York family. AC will have its own volunteer group working together at a designated site.
