Join us as we invite Ansche Chesed member Susan Chira to speak about her work leading The Marshall Project, a nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization that seeks to create and sustain a sense of national urgency about the U.S. criminal justice system. The Marshall Project, is a journalism organization and does not advocate positions or policy prescriptions, but rather seeks to expose the systemic discrimination that distorts the criminal justice system. It does so by writing with care, fairness, and humanity about the people and systems within American criminal justice — those who commit crimes and those who are crime victims, people who are incarcerated and corrections officers. Chira will explore all of this and how in her work they strive to educate and enlarge the audience of people who care about the state of criminal justice.
Susan Chira is editor-in-chief of The Marshall Project. Chira worked for The New York Times from 1981 to 2019 as a reporter and editor, including posts as foreign editor and deputy executive editor, overseeing daily news coverage across The Times. As senior correspondent on gender issues, she was a member of the team that won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for coverage of sexual harassment.
