Women of the Wall at AC
Sun, August 28, 2022 at 12:00 pm
For more than 30 years, Women of the Wall (Neshot HaKotel) have met for monthly morning prayers and Torah reading at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, usually on Rosh Hodesh morning. (I myself attended the very first one, in 1989 – a particularly moving experience.) Despite their legal right to do so – as affirmed by the Israeli courts – the Women of the Wall and their supporters are usually set upon by scores of Orthodox opponents, often with verbal abuse and even physical violence, and not supported by the police, as can be seen in this video.
Sunday, August 28 will be Rosh Hodesh Elul, and the group will meet again at the Western Wall. If the past is a guide, it is likely to be a difficult morning for an important group standing for gender equity and religious freedom in the Jewish state.
On that day, Anat Hoffman, president of the board of Women of the Wall will join Ansche Chesed on a Zoom session from Israel, to tell us about her work and that day’s events.
Please join us at 12 noon New York time, Sunday August 28, on Zoom to learn about the critical fight against religious coercion and on behalf of feminist Judaism.
