Jews spend LOTS of hours — especially during Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur — reciting ancient prayers. Maybe during those long hours you wonder what you’re doing. Does God hear? Or exist? Might some other activity be more useful?
During the month of Elul, as Rosh HaShanah approaches, please join AC’s clergy to explore how we can make our prayer meaningful. Be not afraid! No honest question or proposed answer is out of bounds. Yael, Natasha and Jeremy will facilitate conversations among us, and will share what works for them. All sessions will meet at 7:30 on the Tuesday and Thursday evenings of Elul.
“I can’t say these prayers,” many Jews instinctively react to the liturgy. “I don’t believe in … [Fill in the blank.]” But what theological premise does deep prayer really require? What if our prayer book is not a botched account of science or philosophy, but a collection of the religious longings and poetic creativity of Jews over centuries. Perhaps davvening gets richer when we address it as poetry, not prose.
